ABOUT PHA (WA)

PHA (WA) is a member of the Australian Council of Professional Historians Associations (ACPHA).  ACPHA established the national criteria by which PHA (WA) and other member associations accredit historians similar to the way that other professionals are accredited such as doctors, architects and engineers.

Details about ACPHA can be found at www.historians.org.au.

THE ASSOCIATION

Our History

PHA (WA) was established in 1989 as the Professional Historians and Researchers Association (WA) Inc., with the following objects:

  (a)  To promote the concept of professional history and research in the community.
  (b) To establish, maintain and promote a code of practice.
  (c) To maintain the Register of Professional and Associate Members (hereafter called "the Register").
  (d) To advise members and prospective clients on desirable terms of employment.
  (e)  To collect and disseminate information of professional and general interest to members.
  (f) To encourage further professional development by such means as seminars, workshops and publications.
  (g) To maintain links with similar organisations.

The Association was the third professional historians' association formed at state level in Australia.

By the mid-1990s, with six Australian states having Professional Historians Associations (PHA), the formation of a national body became feasible.  ACPHA was founded in 1996, with the principal aim of representing professional historians at the national level.  Each PHA in Australia operates as an independent body and has a representative on the ACPHA Committee. The six member associations of ACPHA endorsed the National Standard for the Accreditation of Professional Historians in Australia in December 1999.  With this development, in 2000, PHR (WA) became the Professional Historians Association (WA) Inc. and amended its rules and membership categories accordingly.

In 2005, PHA (WA) amended its constitution in line with national ACPHA standards.  These Rules are available to download here.

Organisation

PHA (WA) is administered by a Management Committee, which is elected each year in August.

This Management Committee meets four times a year to discuss such issues as accreditation, members’ benefits, the promotion of history in WA, and the employment of professional historians and researchers.

It is responsible for the organisation of professional development and other activities for its members, the publication of PHA (WA)’s newsletter, and the dissemination of such information as work opportunities to its membership.

Membership

The majority of PHA (WA) members are consultant historians engaged in a variety of history projects throughout WA.  For information about joining PHA (WA) go to the membership page.

The PHA (WA) e-Newsletter is published quarterly and is distributed to members, to newsletter subscribers and to like-minded organisations like the History Council of Western Australia, of which PHA (WA) is a founding member.
